High school teachers teach academic lessons and various skills that students will need to attend college and to enter the job market. High school teachers work in schools. They work during school hours but may also work evenings and weekends to prepare lessons and grade papers. Most do not teach during the summer.
- Job outlook: High School Teaching jobs are expected to decrease by 1% between 2023 and 2033. Despite declining employment, about 64,000 openings for high school teachers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.
- Earnings: The median annual pay for High School Teachers is $65,220. Typically, those in leadership or administration receive higher pay.

- Required education: All states require public high school teachers to have at least a bachelor’s degree. Many states require high school teachers to have majored in a subject area, such as science or history. Some states require high school teachers to earn a master’s degree after earning their teaching certification and obtaining a job.
